An Unforgettable Journey
Zina from Jordan, Winter Semester 2014/15
As an exchange student from Jordan coming to Germany, this 6-month journey on the RheinAhrCampus was a wonderful experience. Before coming to Germany, we spent a lot of time preparing for the upcoming 6 months. It was very much a hassle but it was worth it. Coming to Remagen, the first few weeks were a bit hard in regards to getting used to the idea of being in a new, different city. The staff in the university was very helpful, by giving each one of us a buddy to help us get around. We got to know the city; where the important supermarkets were and how to get around. We also spent a few days doing all the legal paper work and getting everything into place.
What was unexpected is the fact that I would make friends from different cultures and backgrounds and they would remain my friends until now. This is probably the most beneficial thing of the whole experience. We got to know each other and everyone’s background, how every culture differs from the other and we ended up getting along extremely well. We shared so many memories and good times, we cooked together and celebrated each other’s birthdays.
The main thing that this university experience helped me learn is independence and it also helped to strengthen my personality to a greater extent. This is because we were faced with a lot of uncertainty before coming to Germany it was a whole other culture and we had no idea how it will be like. We also had a huge responsibility of finding an internship and this required a lot of hard work and patience. It also gave me a lot of insights about the German culture and cultures from all over the world.
Going back to Jordan, I would greatly recommend Remagen to students, as it is a great, comfortable city with extremely friendly individuals and university staff. Whenever we needed anything, they were there for us and were able to help us. If I could summarize my German experience into words, I would say it was much greater than I expected. I have made friends that will last a lifetime and discovered new things about myself that I wasn’t aware of before. Moreover, I benefited greatly in the courses I took at university and was able to excel at most of them.
