Better than expectations

My name is Zaina Abdin. I am a Palestinian from Jordan, and I did my exchange semester in Hochschule Koblenz RAC in the summer semester of 2022.

I didn’t know what to expect before arriving, all I knew is that I was overwhelmed with anticipation. Upon arrival, I looked around and I was in a new place with new people, and that can easily make one feel alone. Gladly I was welcomed by the amazing people at Sprachen internationales of RAC. During orientation week I met people from all around the globe. I was provided with all the information and support I needed. During this week, I spent time with international students who enlightened me about their culture and ideas. I grew close with them; we became instant friends.

Once you start to explore the charmingly beautiful city, you start to discover the hidden gems of Remagen. I felt so encouraged to go out and talk long walks, to play sports, and meet new people. The proximity of cities like Bonn, Koblenz, and Cologne gives more room for adventure. Each city gives you a one-of-a-kind experience.

Many of my memories in Remagen were made right beside the Rhine River, only minutes away from the RAC. I take with me memories of serenity as well as memories of good times with friends. It is a wonderful thing to go and sit by the river alone, meet some of your friends there, or maybe even get to know new people.

I can’t tell you it’s all great experiences. Going abroad has its bitter moments. You miss home and you sometimes deal with cultural clashes that lead you into sticky situations. In the end these bitter experiences teach you something.

There’s always a silver lining…

In the short time I had, I visited the most beautiful sights, experienced things for the first time. It was truly an unforgettable experience filled with unforgettable people. It is safe to say that my experience at RAC was not what I expected, it was better.
